Nobel Peace Laureate, Wangari Maathai applauds Mr. Martti Ahtisaari on 2008 Nobel Peace Prize

Professor Wangari Maathai and the Green Belt Movement applaud the announcement by the Norwegian Nobel Committee that President Martti Ahtisaari, Former President of the Republic of Finland has won the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to build lasting peace around the world.
Professor Maathai welcomed the news saying “I want to join the world in celebrating today President Ahtisaari for the work he has done over the years on different continents. I am particularly thinking of the wonderful work he did in Namibia and the Horn of Africa.”
Prof Maathai also congratulated the Nobel Peace Committee for their excellent choice for this year Prize. President Ahtisaari has devoted a large part of his life and his diplomatic expertise working to restore peace. It is a great honor to welcome him to the Nobel Peace Laureate family. We wish him every success in his work ahead.
Wangari Maathai is the founder of the Green Belt Movement and the 2004 Nobel Peace Laureate. Over the years, she has campaigned tirelessly for democracy, human rights and environmental conservation. She is the Goodwill Ambassador to the Congo Forest Basin and a member of the Nobel Women’s Initiative.
