Premier Eye Care of Florida

The aim of the Premier Project is to mobilize community participation in environmental conservation by using tree-planting as the entry point, specifically in the Kangundo constituency, Kitui South area, and Mutito area of southwest Kenya. Under the guidance of GBM, these communities have planted over 41,000 trees to date.

The specific objectives of this project are:
1. Increase community participation in the management of natural resources
2. Build capacity in communities to manage their local resources
3. Tree-planting and protection of existing forests

The challenges faced by GBM groups in these areas include stabilizing tree nurseries after the post-election violence of 2008 and adapting to the changing environmental conditions caused by Kenya’s prolonged drought, such as water and food scarcity. With guidance from GBM, women and their families are coming together to improve their tree-planting survival rates and engage in food security programs, including crop diversification and the re-introduction of indigenous crops.

The map below shows the tree-planting sites of the Premier Project.
